In my last article on IPMA, I wrote about the fourth competence element in the People Area, Teamwork. In this article, I am writing on the next competence element of the People Area: Conflict & Crisis.

This competence element aims to enable the individual to take effective action when a crisis or clash of opposing interests/incompatible personalities occurs.

Each team member is an individual who comes together, aiming to deliver this project successfully and eventually, the customer will be happy with the deliverable. Each of us brings the team different experiences and views that might be in conflict or disagreement with another person.

As project managers, we need to acknowledge this fact and anticipate such a situation early. Furthermore, we need to be objective in dealing with the disagreement and referring that to the project objective. This process needs to be transparent, and probably we need to ask the team for their views and listen to what they got to contribute.

When a decision is made, we need to mediate the situation and resolve any potential conflict that might arise due to this decision. Such incidents should also be documented down as an occurrence and allow others to learn from this.

In addition, there could be other Power & Interest at play in some cases that we need to manage on top of this conflict. Thus, it is never easy being a project manager of complex projects and spending most of our time communicating.

Execution of this CE depends on the other CEs and cannot happen in a silo. The other CEs include Power & Interest, Culture & Values, Resources, Plan and Control and others.

Thank you for reading, and I hope it gives you a glimpse into this Conflict & Crisis CE. In my next article, I will write on the “Resourcefulness” competence element.
