In my last article on IPMA, I wrote about the fourth competence element in the People Area, Relationship & Engagement. In this article, I am writing on the next competence element of the People Area: Leadership.

This competence element aims to enable the individual to lead, provide direction and motivate others in order to enhance individual and team performance.

A Project Manager does not work alone. Instead, the PM assembles a group of individuals to perform different activities that make up the Project. As the team forms together initially, there are bound to have various issues and dynamics that the PM or leaders need to address. All these are the different mechanism that revolves around teamwork.

A team that synergised bring together value that is much greater than all the individuals combined. But, on the other hand, a dysfunctional team can be detrimental and destructive to the Project and the entire organisation. Thus, it is essential for the PM to carefully manages this. Communication might be one of the keys to this.

I am fortunate to work with a great team once under a leader who trusts each of us. Therefore, we dare to move forward to bring tremendous value to our customers and our work, knowing that we have the support of the leader and our fellow team members. Back then, we were a truly effective team that brought a significant milestone to the organisation compared to a larger group.

During my Project Management Training, I have also mapped the

Tuckman’s Five Stages of team development to the Five Process Groups defined in the PMBOK.

Mapping of Tuckman’s 5 Stages against 5 Process Groups in PMBOK

Execution of this CE depends on the other CEs and cannot happen in a silo. The other CEs include Power & Interest, Culture & Values, and others.

Thank you for reading, and I hope it gives you a glimpse into this Personal Communication CE. In my next article, I will write on the “Teamwork” competence element.
