In my last article on IPMA, I wrote about the last competence element in the People Area, Result Orientation. In this article, I am writing on the first competence element of the Practice Area: Project Design.

This competence element is to enable the individual to successfully integrate all contextual and social aspects and derive the most advantageous approach for a project to ensure buy-in and success.

Besides getting the requirements and objectives from the stakeholders, it is equally essential to set up the structure to run the project. Therefore, the PM must not solely focus on the individual project but from the organisation’s perspective. The project’s impact might be more significant beyond the project but impacting the other projects, programmes or portfolio in the organisation.

After knowing the impact, the PM will need to design the structure of the project organisation and determine how the team will deliver this project successfully. While working on the details, the PM must also be sensitive to the informal influences that could indirectly affect the project. This goes beyond stakeholders management which could include the external environmental factors that one might not control.

Execution of this CE depends on the other CEs and cannot happen in a silo. The other CEs include Leadership, Resourcefulness, Negotiation, Result Orientation and others.

Thank you for reading, and I hope it gives you a glimpse into this Project Design CE. In my next article, I will write on the Requirement and Objectives competence element in Practice Area.
