In my last article on IPMA, I wrote about the Ninth competence element in the People Area, Negotiation. In this article, I am writing on the final competence element of the People Area: Result Orientation.

This competence element is to enable the individual to focus on the agreed outcomes and drive towards making the project a success.

The standard definition of a successful project goal is to deliver the project within Scope, Schedule and Cost. However, this standard definition could be too simplistic in a reality where challenges of different scales come knocking on our project.

A project manager needs to manage the triple constraint and know which might be the first to go, if there’s a need, to deliver the eventual outcome. To make easier decision-making, one might need to define what’s the least flexible and most flexible in a project. It helps to put a clear perspective on managing a problem in advance instead of managing it when we are in the midst of it.

Managing the stakeholders’ expectations is crucial to achieving the desired outcome at the end of the project — especially those stakeholders who will be directly impacted by the project deliverables. Gone are the days that we can define project success from delivery within Scope, Schedule and Cost. If the customer is not satisfied, the project can be a successful failure.

Execution of this CE depends on the other CEs and cannot happen in a silo. The other CEs include Design, Goals, Objectives & Benefits, Quality, Stakeholders and others.

Thank you for reading, and I hope it gives you a glimpse into this Results Orientation CE. In my next article, I will write on “Project Design, “ the first competence element in Practice Area.
