IPMA Perspective Competence Element — Teamwork
In my last article on IPMA, I wrote about the fourth competence element in the People Area, Leadership. In this article, I am writing on the next competence element of the People Area: Teamwork.
This competence element aims to enable the individual to select the right team members, promote a team orientation and effectively manage a team.
A team can be defined as different individuals coming together as a collective group to achieve a common goal. In a project context, people with different skill sets come together to deliver something unique for a specific duration. Therefore, it is essential to select team members who can contribute to the successful delivery of the project. The project manager should also set the objectives and ground rules for the team to follow.
Each of us will have our interest and benefit that we are eyeing, even as a group. A project manager needs to be aware of this and seek to strike a common ground with each core team member. Then, the core team members can be delegated to work on this with the rest of the team members.
A team likes to be motivated and rewarded with positive news. However, if we push boundaries and do something new, we inevitably make mistakes along with the project. As a leader, it is essential to recognise this fact and work on giving feedback constructively to benefit the whole project team. One way is to provide “Sandwich Feedback”, be objective and not against an individual. A project manager has the sole ownership for the project and the team, and it’s key to build the team on moving towards the common goal then isolating an individual.
Are you operating as an effective team?
Execution of this CE depends on the other CEs and cannot happen in a silo. The other CEs include Power & Interest, Culture & Values, Resources, PLan and Control and others.
Thank you for reading, and I hope it gives you a glimpse into this Personal Communication CE. In my next article, I will write on the “Conflict and Crisis” competence element.
